Pear Body Shape: Characteristics, Measurements & Styling Guide

A pear body shape, also called a triangle silhouette, describes an outline with more fullness through the hips than the upper body and often a distinct waist. Hip circumference can be compared with bust circumference, while shoulder width is a separate visual observation. The name describes proportions, not a rule about what you should wear.

To check your own starting point, use the measurement guide and measurement calculator. The broader body-shapes guide shows how this outline compares with the other labels.

Identifying Pear Shape Proportions

Measure your bust (B) at the fullest point, natural waist (W), and full hips (H) at the fullest point. Use a flexible, non-stretch tape, keep it level, and record every circumference in the same unit. New Mexico State University Extension’s fitting guide describes the bust, waist, and full-hip measurement points and recommends snug, rather than tight, measurements.

In this site’s descriptive calculator, B ÷ H below 0.95 can suggest pear-leaning proportions: the bust circumference is more than about 5% smaller than the hip circumference. The calculator first checks whether W ÷ the larger of B and H is at least 0.90, which takes precedence. A result within 0.01 of a relevant cutoff is marked mixed. These are this tool’s thresholds, not universal definitions of a pear figure. They do not measure shoulder width.

For example, B = 36 inches and H = 40 inches gives B ÷ H = 0.90. If W = 28 inches, W ÷ H = 0.70, below the calculator’s first cutoff; with no conflicting shoulder observation, the measurements suggest pear-leaning proportions. Look from the front, too: shoulders may appear narrower than the hips, similar in width, or wider. If that observation conflicts with the circumference-based suggestion, the calculator returns mixed proportions rather than forcing a label.

A spoon description is sometimes used when fullness is more pronounced at the high hip, closer to the waist. The current calculator uses full-hip circumference and does not ask for a high-hip measurement, so it cannot distinguish that variation. If this distinction matters for clothing fit, compare the upper hip and full hip in a mirror or while trying on garments; the full measurement guide explains the main points used here.

Flattering Wardrobe Principles for Pear Silhouettes

If you want a more even-looking line from shoulder to hip, try a boatneck or a sleeve with some structure at the shoulder. A boatneck runs horizontally across the upper chest; shoulder detail adds visible volume there. These details can change the visual emphasis of an outfit, not your body shape. Utah State University Extension’s clothing-design guide explains how line, proportion, and emphasis affect the way an ensemble reads.

A boatneck adds a horizontal line at the shoulders; the A-line skirt widens gradually below the waist.

An A-line skirt is narrower near the waist and opens toward the hem. That shape can give the hips room without a tight horizontal band at their widest point. For trousers, compare a straight leg with a leg that widens gently below the hip. The two hems create different outlines; try both with the same top to see which line you prefer. Fabric matters as much as the garment name: a firm woven skirt holds its shape differently from a soft, fluid one.

Check the actual fit at the waist, high hip, and full hip while standing, sitting, and walking. A waistband that fits does not guarantee enough room lower down. New Mexico State University Extension’s pattern-alteration guide shows separate adjustments for hip and thigh fullness in skirts and trousers. A tailor or a different cut may be more useful than choosing a larger size everywhere.

You can also choose to emphasize the hips with a fitted skirt, wear a loose top, or skip any idea of visual balance. Use these garment examples as experiments: notice where a seam, hem, or volume sits, then keep the outfit that feels comfortable and looks the way you want.
